Ecological Turf Tips: How to pick and install the sod?
Sod is an excellent option for ground cover in outdoor settings. In contrast to seeding, it provides immediate coverage, which prevents soil from becoming dusty or muddy. Sod can be utilized immediately because it's available in rolls or slabs. Turf phoenix and high-quality sod are low-maintenance and weed-free and can be installed almost every year.
Types and turfgrass species
Bermudagrass can withstand dryness and heavy traffic, however, it is not a great choice for the shade. Lawns, golf courses and sporting fields can all benefit from the variety of varieties available. The texture of the leaves of improved hybrid bermudagrasses is more fine than those of the common varieties. They need more frequent fertilising and mowing time than traditional Bermudagrasses. Baby, Celebration, CT-2, Common, GN-1, Grimes EXP Quickstand, Tifgreen, Tifway, TifSport, and Tifton 10 are among the cultivars of bermudagrass offered as sod.
Buffalograss can flourish in areas that receive less than 25 inches of annual rain. Buffalograss is easily invaded other grasses and weeds in locations where rainfall is higher or it is over-watered. It thrives in direct sun.
Zoysia grass may brown in drought-tolerant areas. It can be grown on parks, grasses, and other areas that see moderate traffic.
The moderately-textured Zoysia japonica variety responds well to "average" grass upkeep. Zoysia matrella cultivars have finer leaf texture, and are sensitive to shade, and need more frequent mowing. Carrizo, Crowne, El Toro, Empire, GN-Z, Jamur, Meyer, and Palisades are a few of the Z. japonica types. The Z. matrella variety includes the Cavalier, Diamond and Royal, and Y-2 Zeon Zorro, Emerald (an older variety that is similar to Z. marella).
Before calling a landscaperor grower.
Calculate the square yard, square footage and pallets you'll need to install sod. Sod is available in small increments of one square yard, or one square foot. A pallet is able to hold approximately 500 square feet of sod and one square yard equals 9 square feet.
For each 1,000 square feet area, you'll need 111 square yards (or sod). Quarter of an acre comprises 43,560 square feet (4,840 square yards). The grower should not grade, fertilise or spread the turf. This will have to be negotiated separately.Once you've decided on a distributor, grower or landscaper and have them contact you promptly to ensure that the turf will be in your possession in the event you require it.
Preparation of the site
Sod should be planted in properly prepared and damp soil to guarantee its survival.
Sod installation
Because sod is perishable, it's best installed within the first 36 hours after being harvested. Lightly rake the area that will be sodded prior to planting. The first row of sod must be laid along an unbroken line, such as a driveway, sidewalk, or a string that is stretched between two posts. Then, you can lay the following row of sod along the form of a "brickwork” pattern.
The sod's drying out prior to rooting can cause it to shrink, so firmly push the pieces together. By putting sod into wheelbarrows on plywood boards, it will lessen soil compaction and ruts in the planting area.
To eliminate air pockets and to ensure proper rooting, you must roll the sod using a strong roller. The sod must be watered well after planting until the soil has become moist to a depth of 4 inches. Make sure that the soil underneath numerous pieces of sod is damp.
