Dog  Training Goals  And Training Plan, The Basics

Most dogs think a lot alike, no matter their size or breed. You should try to think like a dog and you will have no problem with training. For those that don't understand that mindset, read on to gain some insight.

You must enforce any command you give when training your dog. Giving a command that you are not confident in or not willing to follow through with diminishes your role as leader. Do not ask, beg or scream. Give firm commands in a dominant tone and expect the dog to give the appropriate behavior. Your dog will see you as a true leader when you follow through.

Listening to your dog is one of the most important steps of training your dog. If your dog is uncomfortable or scared, then you aren't going to get the result that you are looking for. Respect their needs and the process will go a lot smoother.

Training doesn't only happen during designated training sessions. Every time you interact with your pup, you are training him. Make sure to stay consistent in your commands and requests and to continue to reinforce those good behaviors. If you are training him to stay off the couch, don't let him jump up there while you are watching a show. Stay consistent at all times with what you want him to do and you will see the rewards.

Crate training is something that is accomplished over time. First, you should only expect your dog to stay in the crate for short periods of time. As your dog grows older you can gradually extend this confinement, which can eventually stretch out to much longer periods of time without any ill effect on your pet.

Never leave a tied dog unattended for long lengths of time. Even the best trained dog can become excited and active enough that they snarl up their chain or rope around and around itself or another object. If you don't catch this in time your dog could actually twist his collar tight enough that he suffocates.

You want to begin your dog training as early as possible, but not too early. You want to wait until the dog is at least 49 days old before you begin trying to train them. But after that, you'll want to begin quickly so that your dog can learn while he's still adapting to his environment, and you don't have to undo behavior that he's already learned.

Understand that getting your dog to respond during the times that you tell him or her 'no' is not helpful. You must find positive methods to reinforce your commands when training a dog. It takes more than a single syllable to elicit the desired response from your dog. All dogs are different and will respond to different training.

Learning your dogs individuality is an important step when training your dog. If you know these things, you can get your dog trained in a way that is the best for them. Now that one knows a little more about their dog they can give him better training.
