Ecological Turf Tips - How can you choose and install sod?
It makes an excellent ground cover for outdoor areas. Sodding provides instant coverage and prevents the soil from becoming muddy. Because it comes in either rolls or slabs, sod can be used immediately. Sod and turf of high quality are easy to maintain and free from weeds. They can also be used nearly every year and CGL Landscaping can be a big help.
Different kinds and species of turfgrass
Bermudagrass can withstand dryness and traffic, but it does not thrive in the shade. These varieties can be used on lawns, golf courses, or sporting fields. Hybrid bermudagrasses tend to have finer leaves than common varieties. They need more frequent fertilization and mowing than traditional bermudagrasses. There are several bermudagrass cultivars available as sod, including Baby, Celebration, CT-2, Common and GN-1, Grimes EXP, Grimes EXP, and Common.
Buffalograss can thrive in areas that receive less than 25 inches of rainfall annually. Other grasses can easily infest buffalograss in areas that receive more rain or have high levels of watering. It thrives in direct sunlight.
Zoysia grass may brown in areas that are not drought-tolerant. It can be grown in parks and grasses that get moderate traffic.
The medium-textured Zoysia japonica variety is tolerant to "average" grass care. Zoysia matrella cultivars have a finer leaf texture and are more sensitive to shade. They require frequent mowing. Crowne, El Toro, and Empire are all Z. japonica types. Z. material varieties include Z. Cavalier, Zorro, and Zorro as well as Z. Marella (an older variety).
Before calling a landscaper, or a grower.
Calculate how much sod you'll need. One square yard is equal to one square foot. A pallet can hold about 450 square feet, and one square yard equals 9 square feet.
For every 1,000 square feet, you'll need 111 sq. For every 1,000 square feet, you will need 111 sq. One-quarter of an acre is 43,560 sq. yards). The turf should not be graded, fertilized, or laid by the grower. These services should be negotiated separately.
Preparation of site
To ensure that your sod survives, it should be planted in moist and well-prepared soil.
Sod installation
Sod is perishable, so it is important to place it within 36 hours of it being harvested. Just before sodding, lightly rake the area. Place the first row of sod in a straight line. This can be a driveway or sidewalk, or string strung between 2 posts. Next, place the next row in a "brickwork” pattern.
If the sod is left to dry, it may shrink before it can root. Instead, you can press the pieces together. Place sod in wheelbarrows on plywood boards to reduce soil compaction.
Roll the sod with a heavy roller to eliminate air pockets and promote rooting. After sodding, water the soil until it reaches 4 inches. Make sure that the soil underneath many pieces of sod is moist.
